Art Afloat is bringing local artists together to take over the Bricktown Canal every Thursday night, to be called the Art Afloat Showboat Concert Series.
This new program will center on boats which have transformed into floating murals, while Oklahoma musicians play music in an intimate setting under the stars aboard the newly-muralized Bricktown Water Taxis. The evening will begin with a check-in at the original Bricktown Brewery.
“This is going to be a special locally-focused showcase revolving around local singer-songwriters, on boats painted by local artists, in partnership with the first craft brewery in Oklahoma City” Showboat Series Co-founder Chase Kerby said.
In addition – as part of an earlier effort across multiple partnerships prior to the formal creation of ArtAfloatOKC – a team of artists have created installations along the canal, including a colorful LED installation by Oklahoma artists Nathan Hendrix and Stephen Tyler, which ties together murals created by artists Tiffany McKnight, and Kyle Van Osdol. “Poles Apart” is a preview of future installations envisioned by ArtAfloatOKC.
The “Showboat Concert Series” will feature a different local musician every week starting May 20 through the end of August. Ticket holders will meet pre-show at the original Bricktown Brewery, 1 N. Oklahoma Avenue to be checked in, and will enjoy a taste of the Bricktown Brewery’s handcrafted beers before going one block south to board their water taxi for the 40 minute show.
The Showboat Concert Series stems from a conversation several years ago between Bricktown Water Taxi Managing Member Chad Huntington and OKC musician Chase Kerby, in an effort to create an unusual space for local live music, and to help Bricktown recall its roots as a home for live music.
“Our overwhelming goal is to move the canal forward as a dynamic, ever-changing space that authentically represents Oklahoma City and its wealth of local creativity” Art Afloat Co-founder Chad Huntington said.
ArtAfloatOKC marks a new chapter in the life of Oklahoma City’s Bricktown Canal. A combined effort by downtown partners and stakeholders has led to this point.
ArtAfloatOKC specifically represents a concerted effort to bring new and inspiring artistic interventions to the Bricktown Canal via the visual and performing arts.
These will include (but are not limited to) murals on the boats owned by Bricktown Water Taxi, in partnership with the Oklahoma Mural Syndicate. They will also include murals and other visual art within the canal area, dynamic lighting displays and live music via the recently announced Showboat Concert Series.
The organizers of this effort are committed to promoting LOCAL artistic excellence, and to making this a self-sustaining, not-for-profit endeavor. Please stay tuned as this effort takes root during the summer of 2021.
